How to
Prepare Your Recycling
Recycling services are provided for the cities of LaSalle, Spring
Valley, Oglesby, Hennepin, Bureau, Tonica, Utica and McNabb.

Valley Waste Services understands the importance of waste diversion to our customers.
As do most industry professionals, we believe the effective methods of
waste diversion are reduction, re-use and recycling. Illinois Valley
Waste Services
works closely with the communities, businesses and industrial facilities
we service, to develop programs tailored to their needs and the market
place.
We recycle on the same day as your refuse pickup and we
suggest that you use paper grocery bags as additional containers and
dividers. Please do not use garbage cans or plastic bags for your
recyclable materials.
Help keep everyone’s garbage removal costs down by
recycling.
Please note: If items are placed in your recycling bin that are not
recyclable, everything in the bin becomes garbage and will have to be
disposed of in the garbage truck.
The following items may be placed in your recycling bin:
Newspaper / Paper – Newspaper and ad inserts from newspapers.
Magazines, advertisements, brochures, catalogs or phone books are ok.
Office paper is recyclable including loose-leaf paper, computer paper,
legal pads, adding machine tapes, and envelopes. No plastic or foil
gift-wrapping paper, but paper wrapping paper is ok.
Cardboard – Only corrugated cardboard, flattened.
Corrugated pizza boxes are ok. Please cut down large
pieces into 2 ft x 2 ft squares. No wax coated boxes like cereal boxes
or pop carton chipboard or gift boxes. Pieces of cardboard over 2’x 2’
do not fit into the recycling truck and will have to be removed by the
garbage truck.
Aluminum – All aluminum cans are recyclable. No aluminum foil or
frozen food containers or coverings. No cans with closed lids such as
shaving cream and aerosol sprays.
Tin – Tin cans for food are recyclable. Must be rinsed and have
labels removed.
Glass – Clear, brown and green glass are recyclable including
beverage containers (beer, soda, juice) and food jars. Remove all metal
and plastic rings and caps before recycling. No glass other than food or
drink bottles. No sheet glass or window glass, No drinking glasses, No
glass cookware or Pyrex, mirror, light bulbs or dishes. Rinse and wash
and remove all lids.
Plastic – Number 1 & 2 plastics. Look at the bottom for the
triangle with a #1 or #2. Examples; Plastic milk, juice and water jugs,
one and two liter beverage bottles, shampoo and hand cream containers,
most plastic laundry detergent and fabric softener containers. Most
small mouthed plastic containers. No plastic bags, No diapers, No Oil
containers. No pesticide or weed killer containers, Styrofoam, plastic
wraps, plastic tubs, lids, caps or any other plastic products. Rinse or
wash containers, remove caps and flatten containers.
